Food Walks

  • Tokyo is one of the world’s great food cities, with an extraordinary density of places to eat — from tiny counter restaurants near train stations to neighborhood favorites and elegant fine dining.
  • At the highest end, Tokyo also leads the world in Michelin-starred dining, with 160 starred restaurants in the 2026 guide — yet some of the city’s most memorable meals are found in much more casual places.

Tsukiji Food Culture Walk

Enjoy a relaxed and lively food walk through Tsukiji Outer Market, one of Tokyo’s most exciting places to taste fresh seafood, street snacks, seasonal ingredients, Japanese sweets, and local specialties.

As we explore the market together, I will introduce not only delicious foods, but also the stories behind them — from seafood culture and seasonal flavors to the everyday food traditions that shape life in Tokyo.

This walk is a fun and flavorful way to experience Tokyo through its food, people, and lively market atmosphere.

Topics include:

  • seafood culture
  • seasonal ingredients
  • Japanese eating traditions
  • everyday life in Tokyo

Duration: about 3 hours

Private tour fee: Please inquire.

* Tsukiji Outer Market is usually most enjoyable on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays, especially in the morning.

Please note that many shops may be closed or quieter on Sundays, national holidays, and some Wednesdays, depending on the market calendar and each shop’s schedule. If Tsukiji is not ideal on your preferred date, I can suggest an alternative food and culture route, such as Ginza, Nihonbashi, or a department-store food hall.

(It is possible to add Hama-Rikyū Japanese garden, Ginza or Shibuya area to this Tsukiji Tour. )

Shibuya Evening Food Walk

Experience the energy of Tokyo after dark through food, drinks, conversation, and the lively atmosphere of Shibuya.

Shibuya is personal for me. I grew up near Shibuya when I was young, and I still live close to the area today. Because of this, I know Shibuya not only as a famous sightseeing district, but also as a familiar part of everyday Tokyo life.

This evening walk introduces a different side of Tokyo from temples and gardens: the city as a place of nightlife, local food, casual dining, and social connection. As we explore Shibuya, we can enjoy places such as izakaya-style restaurants, yakitori, local snacks, drinks, and other casual foods, depending on your interests.

Shibuya is often known for its famous crossing, neon lights, and youth culture, but it is also a wonderful place to experience how people in Tokyo relax, eat, drink, and spend time together after work.

This walk is relaxed, social, and flavorful — a chance to enjoy Tokyo’s evening atmosphere while also learning about Japanese food culture, urban life, and local customs.

Topics include:

  • Tokyo`s lively going-out culture from Edo period
  • Tokyo nightlife and urban culture
  • izakaya-style dining
  • casual Japanese food
  • Kaiseki and Zen Buddhism
  • Samurai and Sushi, Tempra
  • Shibuya’s youth culture and city atmosphere
  • everyday social life in Tokyo

Duration: approximately 3 or 4 hours

Starting time: 6 pm (or 5,30 pm) (Let me know when you want to start.)

Private tour fee: Please inquire.

Local Tokyo Lunch Walk

I can also arrange a relaxed lunch walk in more local neighborhoods, depending on your interests, pace, and where you are staying. Sangenjaya is one possible example, but other areas can also work well.

Choose what to eat. Choose where to walk.

A daytime lunch walk can be especially good for families, older travelers, guests who do not drink alcohol, visitors who prefer to rest at the hotel in the evening, or anyone who wants a local food experience without focusing too much on seafood or market culture.

This is less about famous food markets and more about everyday Tokyo food culture: casual restaurants, small cafés, bakeries, supermarkets, sweets, snacks, and the kinds of places local residents actually enjoy.

Great food in Tokyo is not limited to luxury dining. A relaxed lunch walk can introduce casual neighborhood restaurants, small counter seats near train stations, cafés, bakeries, supermarkets, food halls, and the everyday places Tokyo residents actually enjoy.

Please feel free to tell me what you would like to eat, what kind of area you would like to explore, or any foods you would like to avoid.

I will be happy to suggest a relaxed lunch route based on your interests.

Duration: About 3 hours

Starting time: about 11:30 (or 11:00)

Private tour fee: Please inquire.

Go Local Evening

I can also arrange food walks in more local neighborhoods, such as Sangenjaya in Setagaya.

These walks are less about famous markets and more about everyday Tokyo food culture — small restaurants, casual bars, bakeries, supermarkets, sweets, snacks, and the local places that Tokyo residents actually enjoy.

Let me know where you would like to go.

Duration: approximately 3 or 4 hours

Starting time: 6 pm (or 5,30 pm)

Private tour fee: Please inquire.
