Weathered Beauty in a Kyoto Zen Temple

Weathered Beauty. Wabi Sabi in Kyoto Zen Temple
This photo was taken inside a sub-temple of Tofukuji, one of Kyoto’s great Zen temple complexes. 東福寺(京都)です。
What I love here is the quiet, weathered beauty of the space. The sliding-door paintings, the old wood, the simple rooms, and the calm atmosphere all have a kind of depth that does not need to be loud or decorative.
In Japanese aesthetics, beauty is not always polished or perfect. Sometimes it is found in age, restraint, simplicity, and the feeling that time has quietly passed through a place.
Kyoto and Kamakura are especially rich in Zen temples. Tokyo has beautiful shrines, gardens, and temples too, but for visitors staying in Tokyo who want to experience a deeper Zen temple atmosphere, Kamakura is one of the best day trips.
This is the kind of quiet beauty I enjoy sharing: not only famous sights, but also spaces where stillness, history, and atmosphere come together.
