Supermarket Sushi in Setagaya

This photo was taken at an ordinary neighborhood supermarket in Setagaya, Tokyo — the kind of place I often visit.

In Japan, we do not go to proper sushi restaurants every day. Yes, of course, sushi can be a special experience at a good restaurant, but it can also be part of everyday food culture. Many people buy sushi packs from supermarkets and enjoy them at home. That is what I usually do.

What often surprises visitors, especially guests from the United States, is the quality of food in Japanese supermarkets. Fresh produce, prepared dishes, bento boxes, and sushi packs are often beautifully arranged, reasonably priced, and very easy to enjoy.

For travelers from overseas, this can be a great pleasure: buying sushi from a local supermarket and eating it at the hotel after a long day of walking!

On my private walks, I sometimes like to show guests not only famous restaurants, but also ordinary supermarkets. They are wonderful places to see everyday Japanese food culture.
